Fast fashion is causing untold damage to the world and its inhabitants. Many companies are concerned only with making money, using resources wastefully and recklessly as if those resources are infinite. 

Along with vast quantities of water and power, such companies routinely use dangerous chemicals that impact heavily on the environment, all to create cheap, low-quality garments that ultimately end up in landfill after being worn only a few times by the customer. On top of all that, they often treat the workers who create the garments badly, paying them a pittance and forcing them to work in horrendous conditions.

We founded Printoteca with the intention of disrupting this unsustainable method of working. Our ethos is to provide custom decorated garments of premium quality without causing any of these negative impacts on our planet and its people. We work towards fulfilling this mission in a number of ways and our efforts have led to us becoming the first and only GOTS-certified printshop in Romania.

GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, is recognised as being the world's leading standard in the textile industry and was founded as a collaboration between four other organisations:

• The Organic Trade Association (OTA) in the US
• The Soil Association (SA) in the UK
• The Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA) in Japan
• The International Association of the Natural Textile Industry (Inter­nati­onaler Verband der Natur­tex­til­wirtschaft or IVN) in Germany

The OTA and SA are organic agriculture organisations while JOCA and IVN are organisations working within the textile industry. GOTS was established to realise its vision of 'a world where all textiles are produced in accordance with the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care to enhance people’s lives and the environment.'

GOTS evaluation involves checking every stage of the production process in detail, right from the initial stage of growing cotton plants and all the way through to the final stages of packing and shipping. All GOTS-certified products must contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres and the 30% that remains must also be considered sustainable. Any conventional materials that are environmentally impactful are strictly prohibited.  

To achieve GOTS certification, Printoteca was analysed in depth to ensure we met an array of demanding criteria. We had to demonstrate that we had strict measures in place across a diverse range of elements from optimised energy consumption and waste management to sustainable packaging and excellent working conditions for employees.
